A New Phase

Well, I've graduated to a whole new phase of life. . .trifocals! Just picked them up today. They are those "seamless" type. Distance and close-up are great. I'm having trouble with the mid-range (unfortunately, including the computer screen), but my understanding is that my brain will adjust. So, now it is glasses on all the time as opposed to peering over or taking on and off. Something to get used to. I've also stopped coloring my hair to cover the gray. In order to make the transition more gradual, I am now getting it highlighted to blend the brown and the gray. Once all of the dyed hair grows out, I'll see what I'm left with (lots of gray on top and front; not so much in back). Anyway, I wonder if I'll look like a granny with my gray hair and glasses. Hey; I'm not even 50 yet!

Ah, welcome to my world! I wear bifocal contacts and STILL have to wear reading glasses at times. So that would be trifocal wouldn't it? Why have you decided to stop coloring your hair?

Possumlady: What initially made me think about not coloring my hair anymore was the expense. Dave and I were working on a budget for when he retires. (Despite years of saving, we will be living off of less money. I hate to think about those who don't or can't save for retirement at all.) I spend about $65 plus tip for a color and cut every 5 weeks. (Cheap by some standards.) Anyway, I thought I could cut that in half if I didn't color my hair. The other factor is I think I am getting more comfortable with my age! Right now I am not saving any money because to avoid having a dramatic demarcation where my hair goes from gray to brown, I am having it highlighted.

Yes, life is certainly full of "new phases"...and it keeps on "phasing" as you grow older !
Thanks for visiting my blog and to answer your question about saving my blog entries...the ones that are autobiographical I printed out and made into a book of my life for my three children. With the aid of Staples I made 3 books, bound and in color. It was not cheap ... coming to about $50 per book...but made great Xmas gifts.

Ginnie,

Thanks for visiting my blog. What a wonderful idea those books were!

I have some grey but have yet to ever color my hair. I don't want the expense either or the chemicals. But, when I get more I will do it. Why don't you use one of those at home kits? Aren't they any good?

Hi Karen! I don't know if the home kits are any good or not. I'm afraid to try one. I'm really curious to see what I look like with gray hair. It will take a while for it to grow out. I have much more gray in the front and top than in the back.

Okay, I'll jump in again. I do my own hair color and have since 1996! That was the year I decided to pair down and start saving like mad to buy a house. I have to say I've always like my hair color more since I've done it myself than the three years (93-96) that I had it done by a salon and I have gotten a LOT more compliments. When I started going to my current hairdresser in 1998 he asked me who did my hair color and I said "ME". He was impressed and said I did a good job. The trick is to not leave it on as long as the instructions say to. Preference by Loreal in Lightest Golden Brown. Can't beat it for 10.00 a box.

Hi Cat--sorry you don't like pea soup--keep watching: I will feature non-pea soups. Honest.
As for tri-focals, good old bi-focals for me.
And, as a red head, I am fortunate--the gray just makes it look like natural highlights. No coloring for me.

They say the bifocals stage begins in your forties - very true with me. I wear bifocals like yours and gave up contact lenses four years ago. It was a hassle having to carry around reading glasses and I couldn't see the computer screen!

I had my hair professionally done for most of my life. My natural color is non-descript - sort of like a dark ash blonde (dishwater?). I wore heavy blonde highlights. A few years ago my stylist talked me into going "all over" blonde and the results made me choke! I'm not the pink/orange/blonde mix type so I bought a box of LOreal and fixed it myself. Been using a box for a few years now and I hate doing it every three weeks. If I can find a stylist I trust here in NC, I'll go back to professional highlights. It's expensive but I'm worth it.

Possumlady and Mary: Thanks for the hair color tips. It's good to know that if I don't like being gray, I can probably do a good job on my own. However, I would dread telling my current hair stylist--you know how they are!

Regarding the trifocals--I am having trouble getting used to the mid-distance range. Unfortunately, this is what I need for the computer. Distance and close-up are great.
